eduroam (education roaming) is the secure, world-wide roaming access service developed for the international research and education community.

Users can move between campuses and visit other participating institutions at home or abroad and get instant, secure network access without having to arrange and use guest accounts or extra passwords. The visiting user is authenticated using the same credentials (username and password) they use at their home institution, the institution or organisation they are affiliated with.

Visiting dignitaries who subscribe to eduroam will be able to connect to all wireless access points across campus.

FUNCTIONS AND FEATURES

  • eduroam is available in 54 countries, including South Africa and provides an easy way to get basic internet access.
  • It allows students and staff from participating institutions to obtain internet connectivity when visiting other participating institutions.
  • The service can accommodate 20 users per wireless access point.

    Service Targets

    Restore service within 2 hours for a Severity 1 outage, within 24 hours for Severity 2 outage, and within 48 hours for a Severity 3 outage.

    PROCEDURE TO LOG ON TO EDUROAM

  • Visitors will see eduroam as a wireless option on their device.
  • Log on with the username you use at your home institution (username@domain...​) For example, when SU staff roam at UCT, use username@sun.ac.za.
  • No Inetkey access is needed.
  • Eduroam is also available to SU staff and students on SU campuses to use as a WiFi connection.

    COST

    Eduroam is free for all visiting students, staff and researchers if their institution subscribes to Eduroam.
